NewFAQ ver.0.6 Hello and welcome to /v/ The Musical, an annual community project where we write and sing parodies of songs and make them about vidya. If you're reading this, it means you have a question that was either unanswered by the how-to video, or were too lazy to skim the video for the answer to your particular question. Beforehand, I really do recommend watching the how-to video in the OP, as it will answer many questions and serve as a general guide to participating in the musical. This FAQ is just for if you have a question you want answered fast. The IRC in the OP will also likely be quick to answer your questions if they are not on this list. >What the fuck is this reddit shit? Why are they allowing this clearly not vidya shit on my board? MOOOOOOODS It's been a yearly tradition for the past 9 years. We cultural phenomenon status. Too big to fail. You gonna cry? Piss your pants maybe? Maybe post a soyjak? >Does my song have to be a parody? Can I make an original song? No it doesn't and yes you can, this is not only allowed but also encouraged, as truly original songs are quite rare in the musical, and of course can be more versatile than the average parody song. >I wanted to make a video for a song, but I don't think my video will be done before the musical is over for the year, do I have to stop and wait until next year/cancel my video? Unlike songs, Video submissions are open all year round. Don't worry if you can't make the deadline. I'll update this part when I remember the email you can send it to if you want to have it added to the official playlist. >I can't write, sing, or edit, is there still a way I can contribute? Aside from album art, there are a few roles that are generally welcomed to the musical threads. ReminderAnons are a descriptor given to any Anon who promotes other people's lyrics that they like and want to see done. You can help review people's lyrics and make suggestions when they're posted in the thread, hell, look at me, I threw this thing together, and I help motivate people in the thread under my not-so-secret identity of Yelling Motivational Anon. Didn't need any music or editing skills to do that. Don't forget that I believe in you, anon. >So what do we do if this publicly editable spreadsheet gets vandalized? The spreadsheet is temporarily locked and the spreadsheet owner rolls it back to before the vandalism started. Make sure you always have backups of all of your songs' spreadsheet info in case it gets lost in a document recovery >Someone is mentioning a rule to the musical. Are they telling the truth? What are the rules? There aren't many hard rules to the musical, and just as few soft ones, but there are occasionally dedicated shitposters who try to enforce them/invent their own rules. Be wary of these people, and use your common sense to know when someone clearly isn't speaking the opinions of the rest of the community >So what ARE the hard rules? There are very few. The submission period for lyrics and singing is September 15th to October 15th. You can't post lyrics outside of this time or that particular rendition of your song is disqualified. Don't be a drama-stirring little shit because you WILL be banned from participating and have your songs removed. Bans from the musical do exist and are enforceable. No I will not tell you who is banned because he's an attention whore who thrives on drama and I don't want to give him any more attention than he deserves. >I like a song but someone else has already sung it. Can I still sing it? Yes, multiple people can sing the same song, but only one of them will get onto one of the main albums, the rest will go to the DLC album(s). This is decided by a Death Battle (Explained below) >What is "DLC" DLC is an additional album consisting of a few kinds of content. Including but not limited to: Repeats from previous years (be it new parodies of previously used songs, or covers of old songs,) demos sometimes, outtakes, shitposts, non-singing skits, more shitposts, or things that the singer simply don't want to have on one of the official albums. In short, anything that doesn't belong on a main album. The DLC albums are only available when you download the musical album directly, you won't find them in the youtube uploads and usually aren't included in the post-musical stream >What are "Death Battles?" Death Battles are a voting competition held in the threads at the end of the musical if more than one singer sings the same song. The winner gets to be on one of the main albums, the others will be put in the DLC album. >I had a song idea but someone already wrote a parody for the same song on a previous year. Can I still submit this song? While there is no hard rule against this, it's generally frown upon. If you write a song that's already been done, it's guaranteed to go into a DLC album, assuming it gets sung in the first place, which becomes even less likely when it's a repeat song. >I had a song idea but someone already wrote a parody for the same song this year. Can I still submit this song? Yes. If multiple people want to do the same song on the same year, both versions can get on the main albums, but it's heavily preferred that you do this with a different topic than the other song. >I can sing, but I'm not very good at editing. What do? Post your raw vocals without the backing instrumental to the thread and attach them to the song in the spreadsheet. We usually have a dedicated editor or two who are willing to fix up your take and edit it into a decent product, and keep an eye out on the sheet. If you've recorded your take and it's been a few days, don't be afraid to ask in the thread or IRC. >I see that some singers/writers use names. Should I use one? While it's always preferable to engage with the musical Anonymously, names are sometimes unavoidable, if you don't name yourself, the thread will probably name you anyway, most especially if you're a singer. Just don't make a big deal about the name, as this can quickly snowball into attention-whoring and drama-posting. While not questions, some additional relevant information: (This has been copy-pasted from an anon in the threads) At the end during the compilation phase the albums will be ordered, with the following criteria taken into account: - Number of albums is based on how many finished song submissions there are in a year - Song theme [Vidya/Platforms/Industry/Board Culture/Meta] will be used for preliminary sorting onto an album - Singer - used only to ensure that the same singer doesn't come up in the album order too many times in a row - Album openers and closers are chosen by popular vote in the thread (unless someone intentionally writes an opener/closer, and even then it has to be one the thread agrees is a good opener/closer) - Does the song have individual art? If it does, it can't be used as the opener to an album. It will override the automatic assignment of album art to the songs that don't have individual art in your music player. - Album order is largely arbitrary after the above criteria are met, because sorting the albums is tedious as fuck and different anons do it basically every year when the prior anon gives up - Bonus points if the album doesn't veer wildly between HYPE and downer between songs and has some level of consistency in the ordering You can submit art for main album covers, individual songs and any potential DLC album - There's no rule that album art MUST be based on a pre-existing album cover, but it's been the trend for every year but the first. Anons may be more inclined to vote for a parody of a cover than OC in a death battle, so be aware - Album art needs to be 1400x1400 minimum for bandcamp uploads, but anons always appreciate higher res art for their own archiving - Song art can be smaller, but if you can hit the standard bandcamp resolution then go for it - Upload your art to the google drive, or ask another anon to do so in the thread or in IRC if you aren't comfortable with using a google account to do so yourself. The responsibility is on you to make sure it isn't lost in the thread
